Progress Report

I’ve deliberately held off on any updates lately for a couple of reasons. First, I don’t consider myself a superstitious person but I didn’t want to jinx the latest offer by talking about it. Also, I’ve been a bit of a mess recently, stress has been taking a significant bite out of my psyche and it’s tough to write when the majority of your brain is in full panic mode.

Now we’ve passed a couple of milestones that I think put us in pretty safe territory so I feel much less at risk when I share that the sale of our house will conclude on 28th September and we’ll be moving to a rented house the same day. The house we are renting is definitely smaller (which was always part of the end goal) so we’re in the middle of downsizing pretty much everything. We’ve always regretted the amount of furniture and belongings that we brought with us from Michigan. We look at various bits and pieces and exclaim how stupid we were to have paid for them to travel across the Atlantic so now’s our chance to free ourselves of the clutter!

The house we’re moving to is in a tiny village that has practically no commercial activity, just a corner shop and a post office/news agents. I’m sure this will be a bit of a culture shock to us but I’m very much looking forward to embedding myself in a different corner of the country. Not that we’ve exhausted the Scottish Borders or even come close and I will heartily miss these rolling hills.

Just because we are gluttons for punishment, we’ve also found a potential croft. We stopped by to see it the last time we were in the Highlands and, while it definitely comes with a heavy dose of challenges, I love it! It’s a good quantity of land so I’ll have room to expand my options should I have the opportunity. And the cottage comes pre-gutted!
